Course Overview

Excel In The Engineering Science And Application Of Mechanical Design

Mechanical power transmission is the foundation of mechanical engineering and facilitates the operation of almost all machines, from elevators to electric vehicles. This excellent two-day course develops the necessary foundation level understanding of how to design and analyse mechanical power transmission systems, and then demonstrates how to put theory into practice. The course leverages thought-provoking group activities paired with a carefully designed practice-based case study to ensure participants learn how to approach and design real-world, complex mechanical power transmission systems.

The course details the essential engineering science and technology covering the design, selection and technical trade-offs associated with transmission shafts, belt and chain drives, gearing systems, bearings and flywheels. Participants also learn about permanent and non-permanent joining methods. The course culminates with an instructor led guided design case study that cements learning and ensures participants can confidently design mechanical systems.

Familiarity with first year university mathematics, physics and stress analysis is assumed as background knowledge for the course. Attendees receive a comprehensive set of notes.
