Excel In The Engineering Science And Application Of Mechanical Design

What turns rotating machinery into mission-capable systems—or brings them to a halt when it fails? Mechanical power transmission is the backbone of mechanical engineering, enabling motion in everything from elevators to defense systems. A solid understanding of how to design, analyze, and troubleshoot these systems is essential for any engineer working with mechanical equipment.

This three-day intermediate course provides a deep dive into the fundamentals of mechanical design, focusing on real-world mechanical power transmission systems. Participants will explore shafts, gear drives, flexible drives, bearings, joints, and flywheels, gaining the knowledge to make sound design decisions based on engineering science, performance requirements, and system constraints.

The course emphasizes practical application through contextualized expert presentations and five structured tutorials that build learner confidence in designing complete systems. Core topics—including failure analysis, shaft alignment, stress evaluation, and component selection—are framed around real-world design trade-offs and illustrated with engaging industry case studies and examples. These examples highlight the relevance of each concept in modern engineering practice, reinforcing how solid design decisions translate into system performance and reliability.

Familiarity with first year university mathematics, physics and stress analysis is assumed as background knowledge for the course. Attendees receive a comprehensive set of notes.

Daniel has over 10 years’ experience delivering education excellence in the field of mechanical engineering. He is recognized as a highly accomplished tertiary education educator and was the senior mechanical design lecturer at the UNSW Sydney for 7 years. Daniel as awarded UNSW Faculty of Engineering – Educational Excellence & Innovation award in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
